Been there, done that, but better

My wife and I were around at the outlaws on the weekend to spend some time with family over good food and wine. My father-in-law came out with a funny one.

"Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt"

Maybe you had to be there, but I thought it was damn funny.

Dude. Are you seriously saying you've never heard the expression before (i mean _with_ the tshirt part)?

I beieve the full version is 'been there, done that, bought the tshirt, read the book'. or at least that's the version i've heard.  also extended to include 'seen the movie'.

Yes, I am publicly declaring my ignorance. Perhaps it is my bad memory. I often get the benefit of a joke several times over because it is like I have never heard it before. Not sure if that happens to anyone else...
