PC vs Mac

Category: IT RelatedRory Primrose @ 07:43

It seems like the blogsphere is getting very busy of late with PC vs Mac (or Mac vs PC, whatever your pleasure) arguments, adverts and mud-slinging. It reminds me of the following video which I originally got via email about three or four years ago.

Crash Different

Classic.

Frozen Five - www.frozenfive.org

Category: Rory Primrose @ 13:02

As my wife and I were traveling through New Zealand last year, we were fortunate enough to met a great Swedish couple (Anna-Lisa and Mats) who we were able to travel with for a few days. On the 29th of March, Mats is going to start a Svalbard Skiing Expedition with a group of other geoscience students from around the world.

As I am in drought ridden Australia with dead grass all around my house, city and state, I find this absolutely fascinating. Anyway, check out their site and blog.

Windows Mobile 6 released

Category: IT RelatedRory Primrose @ 07:30

As a recent purchase has given me the joys (and some woes) of a JasJam, it is good news to hear that Windows Mobile 6 has just been released (read here and here as well).

Phone Vs Petrol Station

Category: Rory Primrose @ 06:52

We've all heard it countless times before about the dangers of mobile phones and petrol stations. Some of us have even heard the rebuttal arguments against the danger. Do we need to set the record straight?

This is my favourite part of Karl's article:

But the electric field from a mobile phone has never been known to set off a fire in a petrol station. And consider that in the UK, some 200 Shell petrol stations have mobile phone towers in the tall petrol price indicators, which stand right there on the forecourt, a few metres from the petrol pumps. The towers put out a lot more grunt than your small mobile phone.

Unfortunately, like any hoax (email or otherwise), I don't see this one dying especially because mobile and petroleum manufacturers maintain the warnings.

New router

Category: IT RelatedRory Primrose @ 02:41

I have been having problems with my router (a Netgear DG834) for the last few months. A few weeks ago, it would drop off the net about once a week, requiring a reboot or hard reset to get it going again. It started to get a lot worse with it falling off the net too many times to count each day. After reading lots of forums, I have invested in a Billion BiPAC 7404VGPM from Clearnet Communications.

From first impressions (and contrary to the only two negative forum posts about Billion routers I could find), the setup was quite smooth. After connecting the device and entering my ADSL username and password, it was connected quicker than I could click (the netgear after a reset might take up to five minutes to connect). I also found setting up the virtual servers and security quite easy. The only outstanding problem is wireless connectivity, but with more wireless networks popping up around my house, I suspect this will be resolved with changing channels. At this stage, I am really impressed.

Encrypting XML elements

Encrypting XML is something that I hadn't thought about before. There is a good XML Encryption article over at dotnetslackers.
