First SandCastle CTP released

Category: IT Related | .NetRory Primrose @ 06:00

I posted recently about SandCastle. The first CTP of SandCastle has been released and it also has a blog.

On a sadder note, NDoc has officially died under very unfortunate circumstances.

Sleet Geek 2006

Category: IT RelatedRory Primrose @ 05:58

There was an unfortunate turnout for Sleet Geek in that there was just me. There were a few people who where interested in coming along, but it just didn't turn out. All I can say is that you missed an awesome weekend on the snow.

Saturday started out with reasonably clear skies and Mt Perisher was the place to be. The cloud cover descended to the bottom of the mountain at lunchtime which made it fun getting off in a whiteout. I spent the rest of the day cruising down the run of the Blaxland T-Bar.

Sunday looked like a very dirty day. The cloud cover was thick and reasonably low. There was a decent wind and snow being blown around all day. I didn't bother with Mt Perisher because it was too closed in. I spent most of the day doing a circuit of the Quad to Mid Station, through the Terrain Park (with some very sore bruises), down Powder Ridge, up the Home Rope-Tow, across to and then up the Lawson T-Bar, down Goats Gully and back to the Quad. This was a fantastic run with great cover and powder and some good jumps and tabletops.

Can't wait to get back.

Week off

Category: PersonalRory Primrose @ 03:18
I will be enjoying some beach action for the next week. After that, I'll be going straight to Sleet Geek for the opposite of beach.

MeeGo's were cool, but now they rank as awesome!

I didn't know about this cool little bit of MeeGo info. MeeGo's are really awesome.

Is it hard to go to VS2005 from VS2003 or earlier?

Category: IT Related | .NetRory Primrose @ 04:41

I have heard this question a bit recently. I am a little surprised that people are still only just starting to look at VS2005, but I digress already. There isn't a simple answer to this other than to say that, yes, there are changes and you will have to learn new stuff.

I think most people aren't thinking ahead when they ask this question. What happens when Orcas comes out? I think that making a jump from VS2003 (or earlier) to Orcas is really going to hurt. Developers would benefit from getting on to VS2005 as soon as possible to make the migration to Orcas less painful.

Just a thought...

Two domains are better than one, but only when they both work

Category: PersonalRory Primrose @ 11:16

I posted recently about having a new domain name for the site. The set up was that the new domain www.neovolve.com would be a mirror for the original www.highertendencies.com domain. Due to the increasingly unreliable uptime by the host of the original domain, I have changed this around so that the new domain is the primary source for the site and the original domain is now the mirror.

I was hoping that I could effectively split the traffic between the servers as much as possible, but when the original primary domain is not available (probably not more than 50% uptime over the last week), there is no point it being the primary server. Even if the hosting of the new domain provides a slower service at peak usage, it should still be much more reliable than the original domain. The new server only hosts this site whereas the original host server hosts a large number of sites and databases. Because of this, the new server may even provide a faster response anyway.

Please update your aggregators and bookmarks to use the www.neovolve.com domain. The feed address to use will be http://neovolve.com/rss.aspx.

Assembly loading failure logging

Category: .Net | IT RelatedRory Primrose @ 18:40

This is basically a reminder post, but you might find it useful.

In the development I have been doing in the last few months, I have been doing a lot of config based assembly loading. Trying to find out why an assembly doesn't load can be very difficult though. Check out Suzanne Cook's post about fuslogvw.exe.

SandCastle - An NDoc replacement

Category: .Net | ApplicationsRory Primrose @ 18:03

NDoc has been a valuable tool for many years. Unfortunately, like many 3rd party free software projects, it is hard to publish version after version for a market that has time to use it, but a developer that doesn't have time to develop it (I feel your pain Kevin!). As much as I would like to see NDoc mature to the 2.0 framework, it looks like Microsoft are finally going to roll their own project. Read about SandCastle here and here. It should be released as a CTP soon.

Thanks to Dwight for originally pointing me to this forum post.
